Summary. Tacitus begins the Annals with a concise, almost brusque summary of over seven centuries of Roman history. It begins with the founding of the city and its rule by kings and ends with the civil wars that brought the Republic to an end in the 1st century BCE. Declaring that he will write "without indignation or partisanship," Tacitus then embarks on his chosen task: to narrate the history of Rome beginning with the death of Emperor Augustus in 14 CE.
